Joe Jackson- Hope and Fury (CD)
The album features nine new songs performed with Jacksonâs longtime band â Graham Maby (bass), Teddy Kumpel (guitar), Doug Yowell (drums) â and Peruvian percussionist Paulo Stagnaro.
Produced by Joe Jackson with Patrick Dillett, Hope and Fury marks a return to what Jackson calls his âown mainstreamâ: sophisticated pop songs drawing from rock, jazz, funk, and Latin influences â or, in his words, âBicoastal LatinJazzFunkRock.â
Opening track âWelcome to Burning-By-Seaâ describes a fictional seaside town inspired Jacksonâs hometown Portsmouth â a sharp portrait that becomes a microcosm of an entire country. âEnd of the Pierâ contrasts British life in 1922 with its post-pandemic reflection a century later, while âIâm Not Sorry,â âFabulous People,â and âDo Do Doâ showcase Jacksonâs trademark humour, from biting sarcasm to playful mockery. Other highlights include the bittersweet âMade God Laughâ and the tender closing ballad âSee You In September.â
Musically, Hope and Fury recalls the spirit of 1982âs Night and Day, 1991âs Laughter and Lust, and 2019âs Fool. Like those albums, it overflows with great tunes, clever lyrics, and groove â with Jacksonâs vocals and keyboard playing as strong as ever.
